ACADEMY OF NATUROPATHY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE SYLLABUS

Code of ethics, client-practitioner relationship (hours of study: 100)

- Learn about the principles and standards of conduct expected from naturopathic practitioners and how to guide ethical decision making and behaviour with clients
- Dimension of human compassion
- This course will look at the aspects of your relationship by helping you view them as unique individuals 

Anatomy/Physiology (hours of study: 350)

- Learn all about the major systems of the body, tissues, cells and how they work together to keep the body functioning in homeostasis
- Comprehensive study of the human body both structure and function
- Microbiome 101: all about gut health, dysbiosis, connection to other systems, flora etc.
- The human body and its function
▪ circulatory systems
▪ respiratory systems
▪ skin organ system
▪ urinary system
▪ nervous system
▪ endocrine system
▪ digestive system
▪ muscular system
▪ lymphatic system
▪ reproductive system

Foundations and Therapeutic Foods (hours of study: 100)

- Learn about the history of naturopathy, alternative medicine and how cultures from all over the world use food as “medicine”

Vitamins and minerals (hours of study: 200)

- Fat soluble vitamins, B vitamins and others
- Minerals and salts
- Trace elements
- Heavy metals
- Bioavailability of vitamins and minerals
- Supplement terminology, quality, absorption
- In-class course given of 5hrs (in addition to online material) to go over supplementation and nutraceuticals  

Nutrition (proteins, fats, carbs), metabolism (hours of study: 200)

- Learn about foundational nutrition form a holistic approach and individual needs
- Learn how to teach your clients how to listen to their bodies, lean into their bodily cues surrounding hunger and have a healthy relationship with food and nutrition
- This course will teach you how to read nutrition labels, food quality, meal planning and prepping, micronutrients, nutrient measurements
- Essential nutrients, caloric needs, protein quality/deficiency/excess, roles and, protein needs, kinds of carbohydrates, glycemic index foods, role of carbohydrates and needs, kinds of fibre (soluble and insoluble), classification of fats, omegas, excess/needs, cholesterol 

Hormones (hours of study: 200)

- Understand hormonal imbalances and their symptoms
- Deep dive into functions and role of hormones and how they regulate the body and how to maximize nutrition and lifestyle habits for optimal hormone function
- Adrenal health: stress, adrenal dysfunction, cortisol awakening response, stress-reduction techniques
- Blood sugar balance: understanding insulin resistance, balanced meals
- Thyroid health: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, imbalances and sex hormones, thyroid gland
- Sex hormone balance: female, male, PCOS, etc.
- Hormonal cycles and transitions: menstrual wellness, tracking, fertility, conception, perimenopause, menopause, natural support
- Gut microbiome in relation to hormonal health 

Phytotherapy / herbology (hours of study: 125)

- This course will teach you the basis of herbal preparations as an alternative modality of naturopathy
- Learn about plants, mixtures and teas 

Homeopathy (hours of study: 100)

- What is homeopathy? Principles of homeopathy and matera medica
- Fundamentals of employing homeopathic remedies for certain conditions (i.e. cough cold, infants, skin, etc.)
- Learn how to use homeopathy for common concerns (practical application and examples)
- Dosing and strengths 

Drugs and exams (get familiar with labs, understand drug interactions) (hours of study: 175)

- Basic and advanced functional lab testing
- Optimal levels for results
- Functional testing
- Drug interactions
- Safety and scope
- In-class course will be given (in addition to online material) which will go over DUTCH, GI map, HTMA 

Naturopathy clinical case studies (hours of study: 400)

- Gain practical experience by revisiting real-life case studies with two certified naturopaths
- Learn to navigate more complex cases
- Learn how to develop a professional practice
- Students will need to develop and analyze 3 clinical case studies 

Total hours: 1950
